Citizen Doctor

I took my nom de plume from an the long-running BBC science fiction series Doctor Who, which first aired in 1963. It is about the adventures and exploits of a Time Lord who introduces himself simply as “The Doctor.” By the time I had the opportunity to view the series in America, he was on his fourth incarnation, played by the actor Tom Baker. Being an avid science fiction fan, especially of the time-travel genre, I watched the show religiously during the 1980’s.

Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor

One four-part serial broadcast during the fifteenth season was named “The Sun Makers.” It was set on Pluto, which was populated by over-taxed humans who all had the title “Citizen.” When The Doctor met the head tax collector Gatherer Hade, he was addressed as “Citizen Doctor.” As it turned out, Pluto was being exploited by an alien corporation represented by the sinister Collector, an alien Usurian (derived from “usurer”) disguised as a human, who was constantly computing profits and losses as the basis for his ruthless decisions. Needless to say, The Doctor, with the aid of his companions Leela and K9, freed the citizens from their enslavement.

I adopted this pseudonym, not only because I have a doctorate, but because I see humanity as being stealthily enslaved and I desire for us be free. For many years, I believed that science and technology held the answers. A decade ago, I applied my background in complex systems to human society and came to believe that decentralization could greatly improve the human condition. Subsequently I delved into decentralized cryptocurrencies, seeing them as an antidote to human enslavement by the “elite” via the bankster class. Along the way I became convinced that scientific/technological solutions will not bear fruit unless accompanied by an awakening in consciousness. So, I have also explored metaphysics and mysticism seeking a path to awakening.

I follow some other writers for news and inspiration and occasionally leave comments on various subjects, linked to below.

Epilogue

It’s December 31, 2022 here in Spain. What a year it’s been! One reason I chose Citizen Doctor as my persona is because Doctor Who reincarnates from time to time. I remember well the episode where the fourth Doctor Tom Baker morphed into the fifth Doctor Peter Davison. A few months ago I got a very powerful sign that I interpreted as “the end of an era”. One of the implications was that this substack, which had morphed from a project into an album, would be completed by the end of the year, which has now arrived. Citizen Doctor has finally completed his 11 year incarnation. Gratitude to my readers, my teachers and the One, from which all of our beings spring.

I close with a recollection of having had the honor and pleasure of competing with the Olympian Boo Morcom. I was no match for him even though I was a young man and he was in his fifties. In his retirement he had a stroke, but that did not defeat his spirit. He was quoted as saying, “When we get to heaven, we'll have a track meet, And everybody will be young and strong.”

Hasta luego!
